LOCALIZATION, BY THE BRAIN SLICING METHOD, OF THE LEVEL OR LEVELS OF THE CEPHALIC BRAINSTEM UPON WHICH EFFECTIVE HEAT DISSIPATION IS DEPENDENT,
Abstract
The object of this research was to localize, by the brain slicing method, the level or levels of the caphalic brainstem of the dog upon which effective heat dissipation is dependent. Thalamic preparations displayed no noteworthy deviations from the normal in heat dissipation. Hypothalamic preparations exhibited fully effective dissipation of heat but not until core temperature had reached a higher than normal level (raised threshold). High midbrain preparations exhibited variable responses; no deviation from the normal in threshold or effectiveness fully effective dissipation but at a raised threshold, completely poikilothermic to heat when the animal remained quiet but movement in a body part activated heat dissipated which continued effective as long as movement continued; in some preparations this occurred when core temperature was 38 C or above, while in others it occurred at hypothermic core temperature. Low midbrain animals were uniformly completely poikilothermic to heat. (Author)
