MALFUNCTION INVESTIGATION OF CARTRIDGE, 106MM: HEAT, M344A1 W/FUZE, PIBD, M509; LOT IOP-7-5 (MIF A-138-61),

Abstract

On two occasions during a day's firing, the flash tube became detached from the rest of the primer assembly and, when the cartridge case was extracted, the flash tube stayed in the gun tube. It was removed manually each time. Forty-nine primers from the malfunctioned lot of cartridges were pull tested. All pulled at values in excess of the specification requirement, but two pulled at values only slightly in excess of the requirement. These showed poor distribution of brazing material. One of the malfunctioned primers was examined. There was no evidence of brazing compound on the internal surface of the head. (Author)
