STUDY OF NON-OXIDE MATERIALS WITH DEFECT STRUCTURES.

Abstract

Continuation of survey studies included investigation of fluoride structures other than that of perovskite and chalcogenide phases. Complete solid solubility is indicated in the system NiF2MgF2. Work began on the substitution of Ni(++) for Mg(++) in the KMgF3 perovskite structure. A broad compositional isothermal reaction survey in the system KMgF3-ScF3 has substantiated the existence of complex phase relationships and has led to a suspension of activity in that system. The chalcogenide compounds CdTe and Bi2Te3 were synthesized and efforts to establish solid solubility in that system are underway. Hot pressing of CaF2 constituted a first step in working with the half-breed derivatives of the fluorite structure e.g. CaF2-NaLaF4. (Author)
