MICROWAVE AND OPTICAL MASERS FOR MM WAVES.

Abstract

The construction and assembly of instrumentation for the study of far-infrared maser materials and systems was completed. In particular, a Michelson interferometer spectrometer was built and tested, a Perkin Elmer No. 301 spectrometer was put into operation, and suitable cryogenic and detection accessories were assembled. The lattice spectrum of the cubic SrCl2 system was studied, and the reflection and absorption spectra of a number of solids were recorded. The far I.R. and Zeeman maser possibilities of the CaF2:Dy2+ system were evaluated. Preliminary experimental tests of the above systems gave negative results. Two gas maser cells were constructed suitable for operation in the 3-micron to 300 micron range. In the initial experiments, a number of maser lines were observed in the 3-micron to 35-micron range.
