GROWTH OF BROAD LINEWIDTH RUBY CRYSTALS.

Abstract

Progress is reported in perfecting techniques for the growth of ruby from PbF2 fluxes. Large ruby plates up to 3/8 in. thick and 2 in. in maximum dimension have been grown. Solubility of dilute ruby in PbF2 was measured by heating Al203 and Cr203 in PbF2, slowly cooling the melt to a specified temperature, decanting and quenching the melt in a water cooled platinum crucible, and determining the remaining Al203 by wet chemical analysis. This work show a solubility of dilute ruby at 1000 C of 21.8 mole percent and at 1200 C of 23.9 mole percent. Cr(3+) content was about 0.02 mole percent. A rod, 1.172-in. long x 0.213 in. diameter, cut from a ruby plate, was silvered and polished. It lased at 1200 joules at 200 K in a 3-in. long laser head. (Author)
