DISPERSION STRENGTHENED NICKEL-BASE ALLOYS.

Abstract

The dispersion strengthening of 80 Nickel-20 Chromium and Udimet 500 Modified compositions was investigated with thorium oxide introduced by mechanical mixing or thermal decomposition techniques. Thermal decomposition of thorium nitrate onto 80 Nickel-20 Chromium powder produced a better degree of thorium oxide dispersion than mechanical mixing. The 100 hour rupture life stress of 80 Nickel-20 Chromium at 1800 F was increased from 1600 to 3400 psi with the addition of 5 vol.-% thorium oxide. In addition, the effect of further cold deformation after extrusion on properties was investigated with 2.5 and 5 vol.-% thorium oxide dispersions in 80 Nickel-20 Chromium. (Author)
