A RESEARCH INVESTIGATION OF THE FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE SUPERCONDUCTING PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS.

Abstract

This report deals with two properties of high field superconductors; namely, their critical current density and a-c losses. These two properties are related to each other, and in this report the phenomenology of this relation is ex amined in detail, both theoretically and experimentally. The fundamental processes that underlie the phenomenological relationships are the interactions between the electromagnetic structure of type II superconductors and their metallurgical structure. This report describes theoretical and experimental studies of these interactions, especially the effect of surfaces and of radiationinduced defects. A few preliminary studies have also been made of losses in Nb as a function of temperature in which the mechanisms of loss may not be identical to those in high field superconductors. (Author)
