CALCDLATION OF DIPOLE MATRIX ELEMENTS.

Abstract

Dipole macrix ele4ents for 7s - np tranbiti6ns in cesium were calculated using model wave functions of an electron moving in a Thomas-Fermi Ion core. The calcu3ated values for the energy levels ubing this model are in error by approximately 9% for the 7s state and are somewhat greater for the p states. The dipole matrix elements calculated for this model are in error by about a fact6r of three. A variational principle has been derived for off diagonal 4atrix elements of any operator. This principle provides no correctio5s for this model and for the Hartree Model, but has application if simple trial wave functions are used. (Author)
