INVESTIGATION OF SOLIDIFICATION OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL CASTINGS.

Abstract

Several aspects of dentritic structure were investigated in a unidirectionally solidified AISI 4340 steel. The distribution of manganese, chromium and nickel were determined; corresponding indices of segregation were calculated a5d their variation with locati6n studied. The electron microprobe was used to determine isoconcentration curves in sections parallel and perpendicular to columnar dendrites. The dependence of che form of these curves upon solute concentration is discussed and isoconcentration surfaces defined. Conclusions are verified bh metallographic studies on specimens subjected to isothermal transformation treatments. (Author)
