LABORATORY SIMULATION OF TRACER FUNCTIONING.

Abstract

An increased severity test, based on the impact sensitivity of the igniter portion of tracer ammunition, was developed to determine the quality, on a lot basis, of tracer ammunition. A ball falling on a firing pin having a 0.015inch diameter flat surface on the apex of a thirty degree cone, has been found to be optimum in effecting ignition. Statistical analysis similar to that used for evaluating impact sensitivity of percussion primers was applied to evaluate sensitivity results. Preliminary correlation was established between gun firing data and the impact sensitivity. (Author)
