THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN IMPROVED COOLING SYSTEM CORROSION INHIBITOR

Abstract

The object of this study was to develop an improved inhibitor combination for use in water and ethylene glycol type antifreeze mixtures. Bench corrosion tests were used for initial screening. The more promising coolant and inhibitor combinations were then evaluated in simulated service tests. One combination was chosen for vehicle field tests. An improved inhibitor was found which consists of boraz, mercaptobenzothiazole and disodium phosphate. It is recommended that the results of this study be used as a basis for the revision of Federal Specification 0-1-490.
