A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NAVAL AIRCREW STATION DIMENSIONS AND THE ANTHROPOMETRY OF NAVAL AVIATORS,

Abstract

A cockpit dimensional survey to provide operational assesment of the functional and safety aspects of the accommodation of the naval pilot population in all types of Navy aircraft has been conducted. The results of this study indicate that entire pilot population for which many aircraft were designed is not effectively and safely accommodated, and that many aircraft cockpit dimensions are inconisitent with current design requirements. The most critical accommodation factor affecting safe and efficient flight operation was found to be the lack of adequate cockpit dimension for the various sitting heights of the pilot population. Accordingly, a utilization code to permit assignment of naval aviators to aircraft in which they would be safely accommodated has been developed. (Author)
