EVALUATION OF EPOXY AND OTHER ADHESIVES FOR POSSIBLE MARINE SERVICE,

Abstract

Suitability of epoxies and other adhesive systems for use in marine applications was investigated. The adhesives would be used particularly as bonding agents between layers of double and triple planking and similar uses. Adhesives with gap-filling and elastic properties would be desirable, and it was thought that possibly by modifying epoxies with polysulfide elastomers, they would meet these requirements. The water resistance of the epoxy glue bonds on oak was in general very low, but showed some improvement with Douglas-fir. A polyurethane and a thermosetting polyvinyl gave some interesting results that would warrant further investigations. (Author)
