HYDROFOIL FLUTTER SMALL SWEEP ANGLE INV STIGATION.

Abstract

Analytical and experimental studies have been performed whic; define the g neral behavioj f hydrofoil struts for low sw ep angles =0 de.rees to 10 degrees). It is shown that in general the flutter frequency drops smoothly with decreasing sweep angl and becomes exactly zero at the intersection of the flutter and static divergence boundaries. Therefore, contrary to previous speculation, no flutter-free range of sweep angles xists immediately above the static divergence boundary. Possible exceptional cases are discussed and the affects o, span length, frequency ratio, and elastic a:is locatin are briefly examied. The significance of cujr nt desi.n trends and a ,lutter analysis of a typical design are discussed. (Author)
