BACKSCATTER OF RADIO WAVES FROM GROUND AND SEA,

Abstract

The importance of the presence of the F2 irregularities in determining shape and intensity of the backscattered echoes, and its influence on the skip distance measurements by the backscatter technique, are put in evidence. It is shown that the backscatter sounding is a powerful means for the study of the distribution of the irregularities in a large zone around the sounding station. The results of a first series of riometer recordings on 31.5 Mc near Rome (Italy) are also reported. (Author)
