OPTIMUM PULSE SHAPES FOR TRANSMITTERS WHICH ARE BOTH PEAK POWER LIMITED AND AVERAGE POWER LIMITED,

Abstract

For any stable linear system, an explicit formula is derived for the input waveform p(t) which maximizes the output waveform amplitude at a prescribed time instant. The problem and the results are closely related to the matched filter problem of radar theory and the bang-bang problem of optimal control theory. In addition to the obvious direct applications in signal design, the results can also be used indirectly since they provide a standard of performance for more realistic situations where additional constraints are important.
