JANAIR JOINT ARMY-NAVY AIRCRAFT INSTRUMENTATION RESEARCH. HIGH SPEED, RASTER SCANNING, HIGH RESOLUTION, RADAR SENSOR FOR VERTICAL DISPLAY.

Abstract

This radar system concept, when instrumented and installed in a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft, would fully enable a pilot to perform a blind landing during inclement weather without aid or assistance of any kind from ground installations and, further, to be capable of both manual and automatic terrain following. This is to be possible with a simple, light-weight radar system. The antennas are the key elements in the system and are fairly long, but their width and depth is very small. The system is a high speed, raster scanning, high resolution radar used with a vertical display. The result is similar to television with range measurement capability. A transparent windshield display is introduced to allow correlation or comparison of human optical sensing and microwave (radar) sensing. (Author)
