Abstract

The present book represents a part of a general treatise Structural Mechanics of Ships, written for the Leningrad Institute of Ship Construction. Accordingly, the contents of the book and the character of presentation of the material, are correlated to the program and the development of this general course. Only those problems are considered in the book which are directly connected with the strength analysis of hulls of submarines, assuming that the reader is familiar with the fundamentals of general structural mechanics, which are used in the book or which are referred to. The book is subdivided into two parts; in the first, the general foundations and the practical methods of strength analysis of submarine hulls of various design are discussed; in the second, the theoretical investigation of those problems is presented whose solutions are used in the first part of the book and which were not contained in other sections of the general treatise, or were not sufficiently developed in those sections. In writing the first part, which is essentially of applied character, the author made use of the material presented by him in the third volume of the Handbook of Ship Construction. Several of the author's published theoretical papers devoted to questions of structural mechanics of submarines were included in the second part of the book.
