ADVANCED CHARACTER RECOGNITION TECHNIQUES STUDY.

Abstract

This report presents the results of the fourth research phase and summarizes the work of all phases of a study aimed at developing techniques to enhance the output of a hypothetical character-recognition machine by producing solutions in those instances where the machine fails to identify a character within an English word in normal technical text material. The development of the grammar approach, in contrast to dictionary look-up, is traced and evaluated. The context grammar G sub 2 and the list of legal tetragrams from the entries of Webster's unabridged dictionary, second edition, are displayed in full. The use of morphemic analysis, syntax analysis, word lists, matching in text, and other related techniques are discussed. Recommendations for further study are given. (Author)
