BIOCHEMICAL FUEL CELL.

Abstract

This report describes an experimental and theoretical investigation of hydrogen production by microorganisms. Screening studies on new strains of Clostridium welchii were conducted. Outstanding hydrogen evolution from freshly isolated strains was observed. Sixteen experiments with 10-liter-volume fermenters were conducted to examine the influence of pH, substrate concentration, inoculum concentration, and buffer concentration. The determining influence of pH was established and the results were used to set up a 1/2 (2) to the 5th power fractional factorial design. Initial mutation experiments on the production of high hydrogen-producing mutants by UV radiation were conducted. (Author)
