NUCLEAR DEFORMATIONS IN THE PAIRING-PLUSQUADRUPOLE MODEL I. THE SINGLE-J SHELL,

Abstract

The motivation and basic assumptions of the pairing-plus-quadrupole model are reviewed. Analytical and numerical applications are made to the single-j shell, demonstrating the cometition between the deforming effect of the quadrupole force and the spherifying effect of the pairing force. When it is deformed, the single-j shell is always axially symmetric. Cases are found for which the potential energy of deformation has a spherical minimum and a deformed minimum simultaneously. The results are valid for any j. The importance of zero-point motion is studied and is found to decrease with increasing j. (Author)
