HELICOPTER TRANSIENT PERFORMANCE WITH FREE TURBINE AND SINGLE-SHAFT GAS TURBINE ENGINES.

Abstract

The study was conducted for purposes of quantitatively evaluating the relative helicopter system dynamic performance with single shaft versus free turbine type gas turbine power plants. Three engines were selected of different power classes for which detailed engine performance maps were provided. These were the T-58, T-50, and T-64 free turbine type engines which were analyzed with respect to appropriate rotors and helicopter gross weights as free turbine type engines and as single shaft engines. The latter configuration was accomplished by gearing the free turbine to the gas generator with a gear ratio appropriate to the design speeds of the gas generators and free turbine. The two configurations, original free turbine and conversion to single shaft by gearing, are treated for each of the three basic engines. (Author)
