FURTHER OBSERVATIONS ON A NOVEL OXIDATION REACTION OF POLYNITROTOLUENES,

Abstract

The dichromate/nitric acid/sulfuric acid oxida tion of 3,5-dimethyl-1-t-butyl-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene furnished a mixture of the corresponding mono- and dicarboxylic acids. 2,4-Dinitrotoluene, on treatment with the same reagents, gave dinitrobenzoic acid and picric acid. The mechanism of the conversion of polynitrotoluenes to polynitrophenols is discussed. (Author)
