COUPLED MODE THEORY FOR ADVANCED MICROWAVE DEVICES.

Abstract

The structure theorems of semisimple Lie algebras are shown to provide the coupling diagram of a system whose system matrix is a known curve in a given Lie algebra. A directed line graph is developed that exhibits the possible interac tions between the modes that the system may have. The diagram is topological in that it shows the possible couplings, but not their strengths, or even whether or not they are qresent at all. However, in view of the fact that the diagram is applicable to all types of systems-multimode uniform periodic, and general non-uniform--it seems to be a tool of substantial importance in the study of general coupled mode systems. This method of analysis can be regarded as a generalization of the type of analysis presented in Technical Note 1 Topologic Analysis of Sectionally Uniform and Parametric Systems. We have not yet developed the concept of parity which, in the case of pairwise coupling, leads to the classification of what we called S and H coupling. However, the possibility of doing so seems to be implicit io the diagram and in the invariants developed in Interim Report 7, Sec. III. Thus, the foundation seems to have been laid for the general classification and qualitative description of all kinds of non-uniform systems. (Author)
