RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF TITANIUM ROCKET MOTOR CASE. VOLUME V. - EVALUATION OF CANDIDATE TITANIUM ALLOYS.

Abstract

Roll forged rings of Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn alloy were evaluated for weldability by the TIG process and the resulting weldments were tested for mechanical properties. The effects of post-weld heat treatments in the aging and annealing ranges on both parent and weld metal were evaluated. Two sheets of Ti-15 Mo alloy were evaluated for mechanical properties in the solution treated and in the solution treated and aged conditions. The effects of aging temperature on aging response and the effect of tensile testing temperature (-40 to 400F) on material properties after aging at 975F were investigated. Aging response after cold rolling (35 to 75 percent reductions) was also determined. Solution treated and aged sheet stock was manually TIG welded using parent metal filler material and evaluated by bend, tensile, and cyclic testing. (Author)
