INVESTIGATION OF BONDING IN OXIDE-FIBER (WHISKER) REINFORCED METALS.

Abstract

Sessile drop experiments were conducted on two types of nickl (impurity levels of 16ppm and 31 ppm)and alpha-Al2O3. Contact angles were measured for both types and were consistently higher by about 12 degrees for the purer specimens. Experiments were also condcted using graphite furnace parts in an attempt to provide a more reducing atmosphere. No changes were noted in the equlibrium contact angles, although a dull thin surface film formed on all nickel specimens. The interfacial reactions between the Ni-alphaAl2O3 were examined using an optical microscope. A procedure for preparing specimens for determining the interfacial shear strengths is also discussed.
