FIBER-REINFORCED METALS AND ALLOYS.

Abstract

The fundamentals of fiber reinforcement are being studied on the mild steel fiber reinforced silver system. All composites prepared to date were fabricated by infiltration of molten silver into a fiber felt. Preparation of a felt with oriented fibers (0.002 in.) was somewhat difficult, and this alignment was achieved magnetically. The second part of this program--dealing with the production of high-strength carbide fibers--consists of growing WC fibers in a liquid cobalt rich soltte. Previous experiments had indicated that if an alloy consisting of tungsten carbide and cobalt were subjected to temperature gradient z6ne melting, the WC crystals could be made to grow. If the direction of zone travel could be made unilateral, the growing crystals had a fibrous shape. (Author)
