THIN-FILM COLD CATHODES FOR MICROWAVE TUBES.

Abstract

Several types of cathode substrates were investigated, including glass microscope slides, sapphire rods with Hanovia gold electrodes, molybdenum rods with M-24 glaze, and Kovar rods and sleeves with 7052 glass. Further studies of Mo-SiO-Mo barriers were made. Work is progressing towards realization of a compound oxide Schottky barrier using the oxides of zinc and magnesium. Studies were conducted on the metal surface films, including refractory low-work-function coatings. Vacuum emission tests using SiO barriers were made, and image tests using a phosphor screen indicate reasonably uniform emission current density. (Author)
