MECHANISMS OF SMOOTH MUSCLE RELAXATION THROUGH THE ANODAL CURRENT STIMULATION.

Abstract

Basd on the fine structure of the two typical invertebrate myocardium, studies were made on the relaxation of muscle through the anodal current stimulation. Ultramicroelectrode techniques and mechanical transducer were used to study the correlation between the anodal abolition of action potential and the relaxation in both stomatopod and molluscan hearts. The anodal current pulse of 100 msec duration given at one end of the myocardium resulted in a forced repolarization. The abolition of action potential is related to both the intensity of the anodal current and the phase of the plateau. This repolarization is accompanied by the inhibition of the development of tension, and is propagated throughout the rest of the heart. In oyster, lowering of the diastolic tension is noted by the application of the anodal current. The inhibition of spontaneous rhythmic contraction is also greatly influenced by the phase of the cardiac cycle, where the stimulation is applied, and is partly dependent on the intensity of the applied current.
