SPIN RELAXATION OF OPTICALLY PUMPED CESIUM,

Abstract

Spin relaxation of optically pumped cesium vapor has been measured as a function of buffer gas pressure for various inert gases. Disorientation cross sections have been found to be 5.3 x 10 to the minus 24th power sq cm for neon, 8.0 x 10 to the minus 23rd power sq cm for argon, 2.1 x 10 to the minus 21st power sq cm for krypton, and 4.6 x 10 to the minus 20th power sq cm for xenon. The diffusion coefficients of cesium in nenon and argon were found to be 0.40 sq cm sec and 0.23 sq cm sec, respectively. Disorientation cross sections and diffusion coefficients have also been determined for molecular nitrogen. The agreement of these values with existing theory is discussed. (Author)
