RESEARCH ON PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS.

Abstract

The work was initiated to study the fabrication and principal features of thin film solar cells based on materials other than CdS. In previous quarters CdS:Se, CdSe, ZnSe and GaSAs have been examined. Some effort has also been directed to the preparation of suitable films of CdTe by vacuum coevaporation. During this quarter the work involved the following aspects of the CdTe thin film solar cell. The high contact resistance observed between evaporated CdTe and molybdenum was circumvented by the inclusion of evaporated layers of Zn, Al, Ga, In or In2Te3 between the CdTe and the molybdenum. A program was devised to examine the essential features of the chemistry of CdTe photovoltaic barrier formation in aqueous solution. Special apparatus was designed and constructed for this purpose. In addition various GaAs evaporated films were annealed at temperatures up to 550 C to ascertain the effect of doping and annealing upon polycrystalline GaAs films. (Author)
