CODING FOR ADAPTIVE CAPABILITY IN RANDOM-CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS,

Abstract

The design of a random-channel communication system is discussed. System performance is evaluated using two different performance measures: divergence and probability of error. The divergence measure is an analytic tool for use with general channel statistics, and is compared with a probability-of-error analysis under more restricted statistical conditions. Optimum relations are derived between channel statistics, receiver structure, signal encoding, and adaptive capability. (Author)
