LASER MATERIALS.

Abstract

Three host materials were intensively investigated, LaA103, YA103, and Y203. Of these three, Y203 is presently at the most advanced stage of development. A crystal of Nd(3+): Y203 has been successfully operated as a laser. The results of this development are included with this report as an appendix. Problems of color centers and stoichiometry were encountered with the other two host materials, LaA103 and YA103. The procedures undertaken to correct these difficulties are described. Problems of starting material purity are believed to be a seriously limiting factor in the growth of Y203. A study concerning the purification of yttria is given. The spectroscopic data obtained on all materials prepared during the contract period is presented. (Author)
