DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND DEMONSTRATION OF A SELF-CONTAINED ELECTRICAL COLD WEATHER STARTING SYSTEM FOR THE T-53 SERIES ENGINES,

Abstract

This investigation was conducted to design and develop a self-contained electrical system for starting the T53 engine after a 72-hour downtime at -65 F. As a result of the investigation, two modifications were recommended to improve engine performance: (1) the prime fuel system from a nonmetered to a metered arrangement to eliminate excessive exhaust gas temperature and (2) the starter to a series type so as to more nearly match the speed-torque requirements of the engine with those of the starter-generator when battery power is used. A thermal-type container for a battery was designed and developed; tests showed that this container would maintain battery temperature at approximately +30 F after 72 hours downtime at -65 F. With the modified engine, one battery in the thermal container would start the T53 engine after a cold soak of 72 hours at -65 F without any delay or special manipulation of the starter controls.
