SHORT AND LONG WAVELENGTH DISTURBANCES OF A TWO-COMPONENT COLLISIONLESS PLASMA WITH POLARIZATION PARALLEL TO A UNIFORM MAGNETIC FIELD,

Abstract

An asymptotic solution to the plane wave initial value problem is given. This problem is particularly interesting since a plane wave initial distrubance will not in general remain a plane wave, but will decompose into an infinite number of modes for all time after the initial disturb ance. For the case considered here, the direction of polarization of the wave is parallel to a uniform magnetic field. A two component model is studied. The positive charges are carried by one component and the negative charges by the other component. The effect of particle collisions is neglected. Thus the interaction between the gas particles is due solely to the electromagnetic field, which in turn is described by the pre-Maxwell Equations. The distribution functions for the two species are described by the Vlasov Equations. (Author)
