Abstract
The difference between a Townsend-like breakdown threshold and sparking threshold is carefully defined with the sparking mechanism the primary subject. Presented are the excellent contributions on the statistics and development of avalanches relative to Townsend breakdown and streamer formatio from Raether's laboratory; the results of photomultiplier and Nasser's and Waidmann's Lichtenberg figure techniques in streamer breakdown in the author's laboratory; Tamura's recent contribution on photoionizing radiations in point corona; Hermstein's discovery of negative ion glow corona acting as a spark inhibitor; and Miyoshi's recent complet studies on the negative point corona breakdown in air.
