A COMPARISON OF THE ANALGETIC POTENCIES OF MORPHINE, PENTAZOCINE, AND A MIXTURE OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND PENTAZOCINE IN THE RAT,

Abstract

These studies were done to determine if the flinch-jump animal analgesiometric method could detect the analgetic effects of pentazocine. Also, to determine if a synergism of analgetic activity could be produced by adding methamphetamine to pentazocine. The flinch-jump procedure showed pentazocine to be an analgesic with a potency about one-third to one-quarter as great as morphine. Methamphetamine in combination with pentazocine raised the potency by a synergistic action. It was suggested that the combination of methamphetamine and pentazocine might have the following properties: (1) non-addicting, (2) a good analgetic potency, (3) little autonomic depression, and (4) no sedation.
