EXPERIMENTS ON RESONANCES IN THE ELASTIC CROSS SECTION OF ELECTRONS ON RARE GAS ATOMS,

Abstract

Resonances in the elastic scattering are stdied i a scattering experiment at an angle of 72 degrees for He and Ne and in a transmission experiment for He, Ne, Kr and Xe. These resonances result from a compound state of the rare gas atom and occur about 0.5 eV below the first excited state. The magnitude of the resonances can be enhanced in a transmission experiment when only the unscattered electrons are observed. It is pointed out that the resonance in helium can be used for a determination of the apparent electron energy distribution and as a calibration point on the electron energy scale. (Author)
