FEASIBILITY OF BEAM-PLASMA AMPLIFICATION OF MILLIMETER WAVES.

Abstract

Langmuir probe studies on a PIG discharge in mercury vapor are described. The phenomenon of enhanced diffusion in the presence of a confining magnetic field was observed, and radial density profiles were measured which showed the plasma to be uniform in the central region. Gun studies are described which led to the development of a hollow cathode gun. This gun survived well under intense ion bombardment and its emission was enhanced in the presence of a gas atmosphere. One gun was life tested for over 400 hours, and another one delivered a current density of 24 a/sq cm 2 at the orifice. Beam-plasma amplification measurements at X-band yielded net gains as high as 45 db and electronic gains as high as 66 db. The experimental results were in fair agreement with an adjusted theory.
