THE THEORETICAL PRECISION OF A SET OF CLASSICAL SONAR BEARING ESTIMATORS.

Abstract

This report presents the results of a theoretical analysis of the performance of a class of sub-optimum bearing estimation devices. Bearing Deviation Indicator (BDI) circuits have been employed traditionally to display or measure deviation angle, the angular position of an arriving plane wave with respect to the axis of the receiving beam. The schemes differ in philosophy and sequence of operations but all essectially convert the phase difference or amplitude ratio of the signals received by two adjacent beams into a d-c voltage averaged over the duration of the signal.
