INTERACTIONS OF ATOMS AND MOLECULES WITH SOLID SURFACES.

Abstract

Work function measurements were made in an ultrahigh vacuum system in which a pressure of 5 x 10 to the minus 10th power mm of Hg had been obtained. A Pt-W (8%W) alloy wire was used. The purpose of the measurements was to see if low and high work function surfaces observed under poorer vacuum conditions would also appear under ultrahigh vacuum conditions in which effects from ambient gas would be negligible.
