CHARACTERISTICS OF PHOTON-COUPLED SYSTEMS,
Abstract
When appropriately fabricated gallium arsenide diodes are biased in the forward direction, they emit a narrow band of radiation in the near infrared. With the current state of technology, it is feasible to incorporate these devices into active electronic amplifiers. This paper describes the properties and capabilities of circuits which can be made by mating these emitting sources to suitable photodetectors, forming 'photon-coupled pairs.' The unique characteristics of such configurations are electrical isolation of input and output circuits, and unilateral signal transfer. Two specific application examples are discussed in detail. The first is a linear amplifier in which the input signal is differentially applied to two forward-biased, injection-luminescent diodes. The second example of a photon-coupled device is called a logic translator. Several sample applications are given. (Author)
