CZOCHRALSKI RUBY.

Abstract

The Czochralski technique has been successfully utilized to grow ruby crystals of superior quality. The product crystals normally display high crystallographic perfection as has been demonstrated by x-ray and petrographic studies. Optical quality appears to be primarily a function of the nature of the Cr2O3 gradients that can occur, and as these are reduced steady improvement has been noted. Lasing performance, judged solely by threshold, energy output, and beam divergence measurements is now edging past the best of the Verneuil crystals. The greater symmetry of the Czochralski beam pattern gives it a decided advantage. Consideration of these factors gives rise to the expectation that it may be possible to approach diffraction limited performance more closely in the near future as the growth process is further defined.
