RESEARCH INTO NEW APPROACHES FOR VHF FILTER CRYSTALS.

Abstract

Two-dimensional energy-trapping theory and supporting experimental data were used to obtain some initial design criteria for AT-cut quartz resonators. These included considerations of electrode dimensions as well as an estimate of vibratory energy distribution associated with the electroded and surrounding regions of the quartz wafer. A total of ten multi-electrode filter crystal samples were fabricated. These included six 10 Mc crystals and four 30 Mc crystals, each crystal having 4 dot-resonators electrically connected in parallel. The motional characteristics of the individual resonators added in the predicted fasion to yield a single multi-electrode resonator. This technique should extend the range of motional characteristics available in VHF filter crystals and ultimately extend the upper frequency limit for practical filter crystals. (Author)
