THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF BULK POLYMERS,
Abstract
The bulk compressibility of a series of linear and crosslinked polymers was determined, by standard techniques, over the pressure range zero to 12,000 atmospheres and over the temperature range 25 to 230 C. The results indicate that polymers exhibit a non-linear compressibility, with a maximum of about 15% at 12,000 atmospheres. With increasing temperature the magnitude of the compressibility usually increases. Changes in the slope of pressure versus change-in-volume plots show that the effect of pressure, om amorphous polymers above their transition temperature, is to cause the polymer to revert to the glassy state. The analysis of the pressure and temperature dependence of the glass transition is shown in the form of glass-rubber phase diagrams for several polymers. (Author)
