THE PREPARATION OF 1,3-DIBROMO-2,4,6-TRINITROBENZENE,

Abstract

Using potassium nitrate in 30% oleum, 1,3-di bromo-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene was prepared in yields up to 76% from m-dibromobenzene in a new one-step procedure. The m-dibromobenzene was heated in the nitration mixture at 125-130 C for seven to ten hours. A chromatographic study indicated that 1.2.3-tribromo-4,6-dinitrobenzene was the only major by-product. A possible route by which the latter compound was formed is given. (Author)
