MOLECULAR IMPACT STUDIES.

Abstract

The Annual Report covers the investigations of the sputtering of surfaces by atoms, ions, and molecules. Measurements were conducted in the laboratory using molecular beam techniques at energies ranging up to 1 keV, and in the upper atmosphere from instrumented satellites. Sputtering yields were measured by the quartzcrystal oscillator. A technique was developed for the epitaxial growth of thin film crystals on quartz to make the oscillator more useful as a sputtering detector. So far, we have been successful in growing Au crystals on the quartz oscillators with the (111) plane parallel to the surface. (Author)
