ICE PREDICATION CURVES FOR LAKE AND RIVER LOCATIONS IN CANADA,

Abstract

From the relationship between mean daily air temperatures and the date of ice formation, a series of curves were developed to provide an operational method for predicting ice formation at 1 bay, 10 lake, and 17 river locations. Fort Good Hope is used as an example in this report. The first appearance of ice in the fall and the date of complete ice coverage are considered. To apply the curves, an adjusted temperature record, based on a numerical constant (N) and mean daily air temperatures, is maintained starting in early summer. Subsequently, this daily-adjusted temperature is applied to the family of curves to provide a day-to-day forecast of the date of ice formation. The N-values indicate some geographic similarities. For stations where computations were made for both first-ice and freeze-over, the N-values are correlated. (Author)
