EVALUATION OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN 8.6MILLIMETER RADAR. PART II,

Abstract

This report is the second part of a two-part evaluation to determine the radar characteristics of resolution, sensitivity, discrimination, and atmospheric attenuation in the 8-millimeter region of the frequency spectrum. The equipment modifications are described and the test procedures and results discussed for maximum range and azimuth resolution, atmospheric attenuation, and rain clutter tests. These conclusions were drawn: By adjusting the radar set for maximum azimuth resolution, targets could be resolved at 62% less than the 3-db antenna beamwidth. Maximum range resolution can produce no better results than normal range resolution. Water vapor in the atmosphere attenuates transmitted energy in the 8millimeter region at the rate of 0.0305 db/km/g/cu m. Liquid moisture in the air, severely attenuates signals in the 8-millimeter region. The ability of circular polarization to reduce rain clutter could not be judged on the basis of the tests of this evaluation. Other results of the evaluation conducted with the Ship Shape Radar indicate that the 8.6-millimeter region will be useful for combat area surveillance as long as all-weather capability is not required.
