100-KILOVOLT CERAMIC-METAL THYRATRON.

Abstract

The purpose of this program is to design, construct, and test a 100-KV multigrid, ceramicmetal hydrogen thyratron capable of switching a peak power of 10 MW at an average power of 10 KW. An internal seal capacitive dividing tube is described that employs a thick gradient grid design. Further evaluation of this thick grid and associated stacking ceramic envelope sections were directed toward the external seal design tube which is intended for oil immersion operation. Tests of the thick gradient grid are described whereby a single gradient grid was built into a glass tube and a two gradient grid ceramic tube was fabricated and operated. Also of external seal design, the following devices in process are described: A three gradient grid design for oil operation; and A long creep path stacked envelope design for air operation. The importance of matched gradient grid long path conditions is discussed. (Author)
